About Our Team
Danny Rockett
Hi. This is Danny Rockett, composer, lyricist, and librettist of "The Game". This musical is the culmination of the 3 major facets of my long career in show business: Music, Comedy, and Baseball. After spending a lifetime composing music and lyrics for theatre, film/TV, and rock bands; as a comedy writer for morning radio; and over a decade and a half as baseball podcaster, writer, and Cubs fan personality, "The Game" came to me in little bits and pieces over years; on long walks next to Lake Michigan, during ballgames in the bleachers, and through numerous early morning writing and composing sessions before my day job.
And while I have worked to make "The Game" an entertaining fun night out at the theatre for the whole family with hummable tunes, this work is also a political statement of social satire about American greed and the games we play with each other for profit. America's pastime of baseball is the perfect backdrop for this sardonic tale about America's second favorite pastime, Capitalism. Professional sports teams are the perfect microcosm of modern economic power structures, where ballplayers, like most of us, have our fates decided by the whims of the wealthy. "The Game" parodies the system that rewards the monied classes with the presumption of business acumen and intelligence, which oftentimes, they do not possess.
Finally, "the Game" only came to be because of the talent and support of the artists and designers at Trap Door Theatre, where I am the Resident Sound Designer. Our imaginative and collaborative process has acted as a muse throughout the years of writing "The Game", by breaking the conventions of storytelling, and allowing me to invent this piece with a socially charged narrative that tackles unpleasant subjects like wealth inequality and nepotism in a technologically wondrous but dystopian age, with absurdity and song.
I wrote this piece to lampoon the billionaires who'd rather colonize Mars instead of improving conditions on Earth, the peanut sellers who barely survive on this planet, and all the rest of us who exist somewhere in-between on the status ladder of life. But one thing is certain, together we all play "The Game".
